AT&T revealed on Friday that hackers had breached its systems, compromising call and text records of “nearly all” 109 million AT&T Wireless customers. The telecommunications giant disclosed that the data, spanning from May to October 2022, was illegally downloaded and copied to an external platform in April 2024.
The stolen information includes details like numbers contacted, call durations, and text interactions, but does not involve the actual content of communications. Despite the breach, AT&T assured that sensitive personal information like social security numbers was not exposed.
The company delayed announcing the breach, citing national security reasons according to the Justice Department. They emphasized their commitment to safeguarding customer information and stated that immediate steps were taken to secure their systems against further breaches.
AT&T urged affected customers to stay vigilant against phishing attempts and advised them to monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity. They also promised to notify impacted users directly and provide tools for checking if their data was compromised.
This incident follows a similar breach earlier in the year, underscoring ongoing concerns about data security in the telecommunications industry.
